Recently, a movie called “Assassin(s)” was released. This movie is set against the backdrop of the attempted assassination of Park Chung-hee, and despite Kim Jong-il personally apologizing during the 2002 visit to North Korea by former President Park Geun-hye, the daughter of former President Park Chung-hee, claiming it was a planned act, it portrays the attempted assassination of Park Chung-hee as a self-made drama orchestrated by former President Park Chung-hee. Despite the clear historical distortion expressed by this film, director Hur Jin-ho tried to justify the historical distortion by saying, “It’s freedom of expression. I only asked questions and did not reveal who the culprit was.”
There have been many films based on modern and contemporary Korean history, and most of those movies attempt to distort the history. Movies like “Spring in Seoul” and “A Taxi Driver” are some of the prime examples, these kinds of movies subtly distort facts, instilling a negative image of a specific group. The movie “’Assassins’“ is also like that. So therefore, who is this specific group? It is the conservative camp, namely the “People Power Party“. Thus, The Democratic Party of Korea used these films politically. President Yoon Suk-yeol’s state of emergency is one of the best examples.
When President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, there were numerous posts on social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok about President Yoon attempting to overthrow the state like “Seoul Spring.” While people went outside to stop the soldiers, the Democratic Party lawmakers gathered to lead the lifting of the state of emergency and impeachment. Afterwards, in the next presidential and general elections, the Democratic Party of Korea and its leader Lee Jae-myung gained absolute power by emphasizing “insurrection” and “impeachment.”
Lee Jae-myung, who was elected in this way, is attempting to threaten the free economy by promoting the introduction of CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) to allow for the monitoring, recovery, and payment of the people’s assets. He is also silencing the people who criticize the Lee Jae-myung administration through the revision of the May 18 Special Act and the Broadcasting and Communications Network Act. He is also plundering the people’s right to vote through the June 1 local elections, making proper trials impossible due to the dismantling of the prosecution service, threatening the safety of the people. He is also appointing a reporter named Jung Bit-na as the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense to prevent the public from receiving news about the military. He is also appointing Ahn Gyu-baek and Kang Shin-cheol as Ministers of National Defense, threatening the safety of the people and soldiers.
The fact that the movie “Assassins” has been released now does not simply mean that a historical distortion film has been made. The problem is that the Lee Jae-myung administration and the older generation are in danger and trying to reverse the situation with this film. The generation that helped South Korea escape extreme poverty and rise to become a powerful nation before them are now being branded as evil for depriving people of their freedom during the process and forcibly driving youth out using force before. Now Lee Jae-myung and the old generation instigates Koreans to gain power, and in order to continue that power, they are destroying democracy in South Korea.
We must pay attention to this and stop Lee Jae-myung. You might think it’s a problem unique to Korea, but this is not a problem unique to Korea. South Korea has the 4th highest economic and military powers in Asia, and numerous countries are associated with it. If South Korea collapses, the closest strategic stronghold that the U.S. used to check China will disappear, and China will attack a lot of countries in Asia to be larger, but most countries will not be able to resist. Because China is the most powerful country in Asia, and the United States cannot keep it in check.
